Incident:

On August 23, 2001, a female AU student was walking home from campus. In the Westgate Section of Bethesda, a man grabbed her from behind, made her lie on the ground, and tried to remove her clothes. The student used pepper spray on him, and he fled towards Masschusetts Avenue.

Description of Suspect:

Black male, approximately 5’10”, 200 pounds, muscular, wearing green shorts and a khaki shirt.

If you have any information relating to this incident, or witness suspicious activity, please contact University Police at x3636.

Safety Tips:

Use AU shuttles or public transportation to get back and forth to campus

Public Safety offers a police escort on all AU property. Call x2527 to arrange this.

Avoid dark and/or lightly traveled areas when walking.

Travel with friends whenever possible.

Consider taking self-defense classes, such as Rape Aggression Defense System (RADS) offered by Public Safety.

Take note of descriptive details to aid apprehension of the suspect.
